5 Centimeters per Second

Makoto Shinkai's most mediocre work that has nothing going on for it except for the "vibe"

## The Movie

### Soundtrack

I have nothing to say about the impactless soundtrack other than the song played in the final few scenes. "One more time, one more chance" is a pretty good song.

### Thoughts

5 Centimeters per Second tells the story of a yearner. It follows Takaki, the main character's life from childhood, to his teenage years, then finally his adulthood. Unfortunately, other than the visual spectacles portrayed sprinkled throughout the entire movie, nothing else captivated me. The plot just doesn't excite me. You might say that's what life's supposed to be, but I would heavily disagree.

I don't feel like there is any payoff to the plot. While Takaki's yearning is portrayed pretty well in all of the parts, the way it's handled at the end isn't satisfying at all. The reason isn't because he didn't get together with Akari, but it's because nothing happens. He just accepts it and life goes on. There's no climax to the conflict, it's just steady yearning throughout the movie. I get it, this movie's about that first love you encounter, moving on, etc. But it is so dissapointingly bland in how it handles it.

To cap it all off, I will say that 5 Centimeters per Second is a beautifully directed movie. I think the vibe in every part is captured really well. I enjoyed the bleak loneliness in the first part, then the bright despair in the second part, then finally the bland colors of life in the last part. Unfortunately that's all the movie's got going for it. I don't recommend watching this at all. 7/10 Mid-Mid.
